Q&A With Jeremy Stinson, U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Candidate

Jeremy Stinson, small business owner, Navy veteran, and community leader, is running for U.S. House Representative of Maryland’s 5th District. According to Stinson, "Education in Maryland’s 5th District is my top priority."

He adds, "Equipping the people with the necessary skills to obtain jobs will be of the utmost importance, and tax reform is necessary for our economy to recover."

Stinson will be on the ballot as an unaffiliated or “independent” candidate in order to best represent the people, and not the party.

Patch did a Q&A with Stinson to find out where he stands on some of District 5's hot button issues. 

Patch: Would you support the federal DREAM Act, similar to the Maryland DREAM Act, which would provide conditional permanent, residence to illegal immigrants who meet specific criteria, including arriving in the U.S. as minors, living in the U.S. for five or more years, and graduating from a U.S. high school, and could lead to eventual permanent residency after completing some college or military service?
Jeremy Stinson: Yes – but the parameters that determine who is eligible would have to be very restrictive to prevent opportunities for amnesty, fraud, etc. It is not feasible to deport the 12 million or so illegal aliens that now reside in the U.S., but we also must not make it easy, nor appealing for those who risk it all to illegally reside within our borders.

Patch: Do you support the Defense of Marriage Act, or do you support legalizing same-sex marriage at the federal level?
Stinson: I do not support nor condone same sex marriage. I do not believe that the federal government has any place in marriage of any sort. These are issues that should be decided on the state level. I have a more detailed responses on my website here.

Patch: Do you identify as pro-choice or as pro-life, and why? Would your opinion on this issue impact your votes on judicial appointments?
Stinson: I identify as pro-life. That decision is one to be made by a woman, her family and her doctor. Not to be legislated on.

Patch: The interest rate on federal student loans is set to double this year to 6.8 percent. Do you support this increase, or would you support a freeze on the current rate as suggested by President Barack Obama? (Note: Legislation froze the rates prior to the publication of this article.)
Stinson: I would vote to reduce rates permanently. It makes no sense that students could possibly pay six times what major banks pay in interest from the federal government. College students are not the demographic that Congress should be going after to increase revenues.
