Police Department Update and Emergency Management on Agenda at Council Meeting

The council will also hear an update from the city's Economic Development Director about a business incubator in Bowie.

As the council is meeting for the first time in October, and with city council elections right around the corner, there will likely be a lot of discussion at tonight’s city council meeting.

The big agenda items are Bowie’s proposed Business Innovation Center, an update from Chief John Nesky on the city’s police department and emergency management reports after , and extended bouts of rain.

The city’s Economic Development Director, John Henry King, will give the council a brief update on the city’s efforts with the Bowie Business Innovation Center (BBIC) to create a business incubator at Bowie State University. The chairman and vice chairman of the BBIC were invited to attend tonight’s meeting.

The Bowie Police Department will also be updating council on how the department is doing as well as programs that are planned for the future.  According to a memo outlining the update, there will soon be 58 authorized officers, with four officers currently in the academy and three waiting to start training.  There is currently a vacancy for the position of deputy chief.

There will also be an update on the , trends in crime and other statistics about calls that the police have been fielding in 2011.

Bowie’s City Council will also hear reports about the way things were handled during the earthquake during August and tropical storm during September.  This will include feedback and recommendations for the future based on meetings held after each event.
