$143K Grant Will Improve Sidewalk Safety in Bowie

The grant from the Maryland State Highway Association will allow for several upgrades and improvements on part of Race Track Road.

The trek to school is about to get a little less treacherous for Yorktown Elementary School students who regularly navigate Race Track Road to attend classes each day.

The city recently received a Safe Routes to School grant from the Maryland State Highway Association that will allow it to improve the sidewalk on Race Track Road between Idlewild Drive and Yorktown Drive.

According to a report issued by City Manager David Deutsch, the $143,000 grant will allow for the replacement of the deteriorated asphalt sidewalk as well improvements to bring the walkway into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

"The improvements include construction of ADA compliant sidewalk with curb, four ADA ramps, two crosswalks and the installation of two bike racks on school property," wrote Deutsch in his report.

Staff will attend a meeting in September to learn about reporting, invoicing and other administrative duties attached to the grant. Deutsch said he will provide updates as the project continues.
