Maryland Congressional Delegation Backs FBI in Prince George’s County

The lawmakers issued letters to two federal agencies in a joint show of support.

Maryland’s entire congressional delegation has declared its support of Prince George’s County as the new home of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) headquarters.

The delegation came together this week and issued letters to heads of the FBI and the General Services Administration (GSA) urging the selection of Prince George’s County based on access to public transportation, the high number of federal employees living in the area, and proximity to other federal agencies.

“We understand that competition for this facility will be fierce among the region’s jurisdictions, but we firmly believe that an honest analysis of the cost of operations, security, convenience of location for staff, transportation options, and the promotion of regional equity in federal facility distribution should make Maryland the choice location for the FBI,” the lawmakers wrote in their letters.

Earlier this year, neighboring Montgomery County withdrew from the search process and—in the words of Prince George's County Executive Rushen Baker—"[threw] its support" to Prince George's as the new home for the FBI headquarters.

A parcel of land near the Greenbelt metro station tops the list for proposed locations in the county. Several locations Virginia are also reportedly being considered.

The entire Maryland delegation issued identical letters of support, a group that includes U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Rep. Chris Van Hollen, Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, Rep. John P. Sarbanes, Rep. Donna F. Edwards, Rep. Andy Harris, and Rep. John Delaney.
