Fourth of July Critique, WMATA Transit Recommendations on Tap for City Council

The Bowie City Council meets monday for a regular legislative session.

After a short hiatus for most of the month of August, the Bowie City Council is back in session Monday with a short agenda with a few big ticket items.

Up for a public hearing tonight will be a critique of the 2013 city Fourth of July celebration. In a departure from tradition, this year the city opted to host the annual fireworks display in collaboration with the Bowie Baysox at Prince George's Stadium. The city made the switch for a few reason, chief among them being cost, safety and capacity.

Residents weighed in on Patch and reviews were mixed, with some loving the new venue and others lodging complaints about traffic and visibility form other areas of the city.

The city council will also review and hear staff recommendations on a WMATA report on the Metro bus B and C lines that serve Bowie. WMATA held several community meetings earlier this year to gain resident input on the public transit usage and needs in Bowie. This report is a partially a result of those meetings.

Following the public portion of the meeting, the council will go into closed session to discuss land acquisition and legal matters with city counsel.

The city council will meet Monday at 8 p.m. at the Bowie City Hall at 15901 Excalibur Rd. in Council Chambers. The meeting will also be live streamed on the city's website and on Comcast channel 71 and Verizon channel 10.
