Elementary School Students Getting in the Swing of Daily Reading

Prince George's County Council Chair Ingrid Turner started the reading program. She visited High Bridge Elementary to read to students and advocate for them to start reading regularly at a young age.

Students at kicked off the annual reading program earlier this month. "Read 4 Success" stresses the value of reading for kids in Bowie elementary schools.

Prince George’s County Council Chairperson Ingrid Turner, who also represents District 4—which includes most of Bowie—started the program in 2009. This is the program's third year in Bowie schools.

Turner visited two fourth grade classrooms at High Bridge Elementary school earlier this month. She read from the book Frindle by Andrew Clements to the students to help kick off the program and motivate the students to get started.

Council Chair Turner explained, “Reading is an important part of your education and success in life. You should be reading at least 30 minutes each night.”

High Bridge Elementary School teachers Ms. Sharon Collins and Ms. Jocelyn Price expressed their appreciation for the visit.  Ms. Price said “Thank you Council Chair Turner for visiting our classroom today and bringing a book for each student.  Frindle will be our first Book Club book!”
