Prince George's Opens Warming Centers in Advance of Frigid Weekend Weather

The National Weather Service forecasts below-freezing temperatures and wind chills in Prince George's this weekend.

Update, 8:50 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4: The Bowie Community Center will replace the South Bowie Community Center as a warming center. More information below.

Original story, 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3: With temperatures and wind chills expected to dip below freezing Friday and Saturday, Prince George's County has designated six warming centers to aid residents without heat.

Temperatures are expected to drop to a chilly -1 Friday night, according to the National Weather Service. On Saturday, the high will be a freezing 32 degrees, with a wind chill of -2. Freezing rain is likely Saturday night and into Sunday.

The county's Office of Emergency Management reminds residents to check on elderly or ill neighbors as temperatures plummet this weekend. They also offer these tips for staying warm:
  • Clothes should be loose fitting.
  • Wear a hat, scarf and mittens (better than gloves).
  • Winterize vehicles.
  • Keep sand in cars to improve traction.
