Bowie to Begin Street Repairs this Month

The city will resurface about 11 miles of city-maintained streets.

In just a few weeks, 11 miles of Bowie’s city-maintained roads will start to get a little smoother.

Starting this month, the Bowie Department of Public works will begin resurfacing some of the city’s roads to remove cracks and breaks in the roads’ surfaces caused by utility work. The project is intended to prevent water from seeping into the cracks and further damaging the roads, The Gazette reported.

“We want to keep the water from getting down into the road,” Director of Public Works James Henrikson said in the Gazette. “When that gets in there and freezes in the winter, it becomes potholes in the spring.”

The approximately $1.5 million of work is part of the city’s ongoing road maintenance program. The work is dependent on the weather, but Henrikson said it should begin prior to July 25 and go no later than Nov. 15.

The work is not expected to close roadways, but residents should expect some temporary changes in traffic patterns and flow, according to The Gazette.
