Bowie's Power Outages Down to Around 1,000 Customers

Bowie Councilmember Todd Turner says the city has been actively discussing the situation with BGE, expressing their disappointment and concerns about the timeliness of the restoration process.

Rougly three days after Tropical Storm Irene made its way through the east coast, there are still approximately 1,000 power outages remaining in Bowie.

According to a release from the City of Bowie, city officials spoke with a senior BGE representative about the remaining outages in town earlier today.

“BGE recognizes the extreme frustration of many of its customers whose service has not been restored and is attempting to contact some of these customers via automated telephone message, informing them of our plans to be in their communities today,” said Jeannette M. Mills, senior vice president of customer relations and account services and chief customer officer for BGE, according to this afternoon's release.

“It’s important to remember however, that sometimes the work required to restore service takes multiple days and that additional repairs could be required before service to some of the customers in the areas being worked today is restored," she said.

BGE crews are working on several feeder lines just outside Bowie city limits as well as inside the city, which they think will help get closer to full power resoration for all of their customers in Bowie.

"Our state, county and city officials have had several conference calls with BGE where our collective disappointment and concerns have been expressed and requests for additional information and status," said Bowie's District 3 Councilmember, Todd Turner, in an e-mail.

"The mayor has also expressed the city's concerns to the governor and county executive personally and requested their assistance. Both the city and county council's plan to conduct oversight hearings/meetings in wake of the storm, BGE response and general emergency preparedness in the near future to address your collective thoughts (by email, phone & texts) about this restoration and will work with our governmental partners to review and make improvements in the future."

Customers who are still without power should call 1-800-685-0123 to check on the status of their restoration and to make sure that BGE knows that the power is still out at their home or business.
