City of Bowie Honored For Sustainability

In March of this year, Bowie became the eighth city in the state to be Sustainable Maryland Certified.

The City of Bowie, along with eight other municipalities, was honored Friday by Sustainable Maryland Certified during the Maryland Municipal League annual fall conference. 

In March of this year, Bowie became the eighth city in the state to be Sustainable Maryland Certified.

“This award is a testament to the passion and dedication of Bowie’s volunteer residents and municipal staff and elected officials to go green, save tax dollars, and improve the quality of life in their communities,” Mike Hunninghake, program manager for Sustainable Maryland Certified said in a statement.

Bowie's leadership on green initiatives was honored on several fronts, including the City Hall's Gold LEED Certification; the Bowie Green Team's work removing invasive plants from city parks and grounds; the city's 20 year membership in Tree City USA; and local coordination of water quality, according to the release.

The other communities honored include the City of Annapolis, Town of Bladensburg, City of College Park, City of Frederick, City of Gaithersburg, Town of Edmonston and City of Hyattsville.
