Bowie Headlines: Fairwood Park To Open, City Council Rejects Hilltop Plaza Apartment Plan

It was a big week in Bowie from the animal activist protest at City Council to the Bowie State academic advisor who died in police custody after suffering a mental breakdown.

The 30-acre Fairwood Park will finally open early this summer, according to Chuck Montrie, a planner with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, who spoke with The Gazette earlier this week.

Alhaji Abu Bakarr, 36, of the 1400 block of Tongue Street in Bowie was arrested and charged by Prince George's County Police for the homicide of a Greenbelt man on March 18.

Bowie student Kathleen Kaercher was accepted into the Phi Eta Sigma honor society at Salisbury University, according to The Gazette.

Bowie City Council rejected an apartment plan near Hilltop Plaza shopping center Monday after residents from the Idlewild neighborhood came out to speak against the project that would build 50 apartments in a current parking lot, according to The Gazette.
