Tractor Trailer Carrying Tomatoes Flips on Route 50

Traffic was impacted on US 50 in Prince George's County.

Lane closures were in effect Monday afternoon on US 50 in Prince George's County after a tractor trailer carrying produce spilled onto the highway.

The crash involved a tractor trailer that had been hauling tomatoes, which flipped on its side, according to the Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady.

Diesel spilled from the saddle tank as a result of the crash, which occurred near the Lottsford Vista Road in Lanham, Brady said. He added that no tomatoes came out.

The driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries Brady said were not serious.

Eastbound lanes of Route 50/John Hanson Highway were closed around 11:30 a.m., according to transportation officials. Traffic was getting by in one eastbound lane before 2 p.m., and all westbound lanes were clear.

Preliminary investigation showed the driver, behind an 18-wheeler out of Florida, was going too fast, Fox 5 reported
