State Police to Step Up HOV Lane Enforcement Wednesday

In response to a number of complaints, the Maryland State Police will be strictly enforcing HOV lane restrictions on Route 50 Wednesday morning.

Riding in the HOV lane alone to beat the traffic on the way to work? It might be time to rethink that carpool to the office.

On Wednesday morning Maryland State Troopers will be on the lookout for violators on Route 50 between Route 301 and I-495 that aren’t qualified to use the HOV lanes, according to a release from police.

The high occupancy vehicle lanes are reserved for carpools, vanpools and buses, as well as motorcycles during designated times. State law prohibits vehicles with less than two occupants.

The purpose of the lanes is to encourage commuters to carpool to help reduce usage on the highways, especially during rush hours.

The restrictions are in effect around the clock, and those choosing to abuse the lanes will be charged with failing to obey a traffic control device and/or changing lanes where prohibited by a traffic control device. Both charges carry one point and a $90 fine.
