Routine Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Bust

Bowie police arrested two people after finding over $1,900 of marijuana during a routine traffic stop.

Bowie police arrested two people on drug charges Friday night after police reported finding more than $1,900 in marijuana during a routine traffic stop.

On Friday night, officers were conducting routine speed enforcement on the 1500 block of Perrell Lane. Just before 7 p.m., a gray Scion was pulled over for traveling 40 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone, the report stated.

Police said that when the officer made contact with the driver, he detected a strong odor of marijuana, according to the report. The vehicle was searched and officers found a clear plastic bag containing 4 grams of suspected marijuana, police stated.

Police also searched the driver of the vehicle, Jerome Arvel Key, 28, of Bowie, and found a bag containing 21 grams of suspected marijuana in his pocket, the report states. Another 70.04 grams of marijuana were found in the bag of the vehicle’s passenger, Ashley Paige Watkins, 21, of Chestertown, according to police.

The substance was field tested and found to be marijuana with an estimated street value of $1,908. Key and Watkins were both arrested and the vehicle was impounded.

Anne Arundel County Police also arrested two people earlier this week after finding drugs during a routine traffic stop.
