Fire Knocks Out Power to Prince George's Hospital Center

The hospital is currently operating on generator power, according to fire officials.

Update, 9:30 p.m.: Prince George's Hospital Center will continue on "mini-disaster" status following a power outage caused by a fire to its main power plant. The emergency room will continue to accept walk-in patients, but will not accept helicopter or ambulance transports, according to hospital staff.

Original story, 9 p.m.: Prince George's Hospital Center was placed on "mini-disaster" status Thursday night after a fire to the main power plant knocked out the hospital's electricity, according to Prince George's County Fire Chief Marc Bashoor.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and the hospital was running on generator power, Bashoor said.

Three transformers in the hospital's main power plant caught fire, according to Bashoor. Power is out to the entire area surrounding the hospital, with about 500 customers affected, according to Pepco's outage map.
