UPDATE: Police Release Names of Officer, Suspect Involved in Fatal Shooting

A man was fatally shot by a Prince George's County Police officer after police believed he was reaching for a handgun in his waistband early Saturday morning.

According to the department’s blog, two police officers encountered an armed suspect just before 4 a.m. Saturday on Marlboro Pike at Lee Jay Drive in Capitol Heights. After the officers and witnesses heard a shot fired in the area, the officers saw a man who was leaving the area on foot, grabbing his side.

The preliminary investigation says that as the officers approached the suspect, police Officer Brian Newcomer saw the suspect reaching for a handgun in his waistband. Newcomer fired his service weapon multiple times, striking the suspect.

The deceased suspect is identified as 24-year-old Robert Antonio Jones of the 2700 block of Lorring Drive in Forestville. Jones was pronounced dead at Prince George's Hospital Center. Police said his gun was recovered at the scene.

Newcomer is a nine-year law enforcement veteran assigned to the Bureau of Patrol in District III. He is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

He is new with the Prince George’s Police Department but with a history of service with the Hyattsville Police, The Washington Post reports.

The incident occurred in an area near the Lexington Court Apartments where three people was found shot to death in February, the newspaper says.

Newcomer was working robbery suppression along Marlboro Pike and the female officer was on patrol nearby when they heard the shot fired. Neither officer was injured.
