Police: Losing Coach Assaulted Referee, Gym Staffer

Bowie police charged a man with assaulting a referee after his team lost a rec basketball game.

The losing coach in a weekend recreation league basketball game faces an assault charge for reportedly poking a referee in the face and then punching a gym staffer.

Bowie police charged Keith Scruggs of Randallstown with second-degree assault Sunday after a basketball game, reports the CapitalGazette.com. The scuffle happened at the Bowie Gymnasium on Northview Drive.

The referee said Scruggs, walked up to him after his team’s loss, argued about the game and then poked him in the face with his finger.

As members of the gym staff escorted Scruggs and the coach of the other team out of the building, police said Scruggs allegely punched one of the staff members in the back.

Prince George's County EMS/Fire Department paramedics treated several people for minor injuries.
