New CI Unit Moves Police Department Forward

Bowie Police's new Criminal Investigations unit has already proven an effective milestone toward the Departments establishment.

The implementation of the new criminal investigations unit is an important milestone toward the Bowie Police Department becoming fully operational according to Acting Police .

"It has always been in the plan to create a CI unit," he said.

The CI unit, which became operational Nov. 1, is responsible for investigating mid-level criminal cases in the area, such as robberies, private property crimes, and assaults.

Previously these investigations were conducted by the more established Prince Georges County Police Department.

Prince George's police will still be responsible for investigations concerning higher level crimes Nesky said.

"[CI] will cover everything, except for 1st degree rape and murder, any homicides and things like that would be handled by Prince George's county."

Suicides, sexual assaults and child abuse will also be handled by the

Nesky said the division has to become more established before it will take on more of the investigations designated for the Prince George's police.

"You have to be able to do [investigate] properly," he said. "Once [CI] gets in that comfortable zone of doing things properly we'll take on more."

Four police officers were moved from patrol to man the division. In addition the Department purchased some unmarked cars.

While the unit has only been functional for a few months, it has been effective within the department, Nesky said.

"[The CI unit] has been able to close out quite a few investigations and provide quick response," he said.

The Bowie Police Department still has a way to go to reach its ultimate goals according to Mayor G. Frederick Robinson.

"[The Department] is still in its growing stages, we're making progress," he said. "We're still a little bit ahead of where I thought it would be at this time."

In addition to the CI unit the will soon welcome a new building at the end of this month. According to Chief Nesky the Department hopes to be functioning from the new Police Station in April.
