Man Who Saw Dead Girlfriend as Devil, Dracula Sentenced to 12 Years

Barry Kin Lui pleaded guilty to stabbing Lan Mu Do after she asked him to move out of their house and obtained the deed to his Gaithersburg home.

A Beltsville man who had asked a jury to find him not criminally responsible for stabbing his girlfriend to death, saying he envisioned her as a “devil” or “Dracula” figure, was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday.

The Prince George’s County Police found Lan Mu Do, 50, in her home in the 3500 block of Cherryvale Drive in the early hours of Aug. 17, 2011, reports WJLA TV. She had injuries to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Barry Kin Lui was arrested at the scene. Police say Lui and Do were acquaintances and lived in the same residence. A domestic dispute between them turned into a physical altercation.

Lui, 63, pleaded guilty to stabbing Do, reports The Washington Post, but had asked a jury to find him “not criminally responsible” for her murder. In May, a Prince George’s County jury rejected his request to be sentenced under an insanity defense so he could have served his sentence in a state mental health hospital.

Lui said he had mental breakdowns after signing over the deed to his Gaithersburg house to Do, his girlfriend of less than a year. He testified that he saw Do as a “devil” or “Dracula” when she refused to return his property and told him to move out of the Beltsville home they shared.

Lui will get three years credit for time he has already served and at least five years probation upon his release, the Post says.
