Lightning Strike Sparks Home Fire, Significant Damage Caused

After severe thunderstorms rolled through the area on Sunday, a lightning strike started a fire that took 35 firefighters 20 minutes to contain.

As a severe thunderstorm system rolled through Bowie Sunday evening, a strike of lightning hit the roof of a home in the 13000 block of Martha's Choice Circle—causing significant damage to the home—according to Mark Brady, a spokesman for the county fire department.

Total damages are still being estimated, but the fire proved hard to get under control, requiring 35 firefighters on the scene to fight for about 20 minutes, according to Brady.

Nobody was injured in the incident, and none of the neighboring homes were affected by either the strike or the resulting fire.
