Kitten Trapped in HVAC Unit Rescued, Adopted by Firefighter

The kitten was apparently trapped after its mother tried to free her offspring and became stuck and ended up blocking the exit. The orphaned kitten has a new home with its hero a Bowie firefighter.

It’s no secret that cats can get into some pretty tight spots, and on June 11, firefighters from Engine 431 were called on to help free an animal stuck in a pipe.

When they arrived at around 2 p.m., the crew and Bowie Volunteer Fire Department Captain Steve Stearns heard a cat crying from a discarded HVAC unit that was stored next to a shed.

Bowie Animal Control assisted in the rescue, helping the firefighters to break down the unit and free the trapped kitten.

The kitten apparently became trapped when its mother became stuck in the unit and died—presumably trying to free the kitten—but ended up blocking the exit.

The kitten was then examined and cleaned by Bowie Animal Control, and was later adopted by one of the career firefighters that responded to the call.
