John Nesky Officially Sworn in as Bowie's New Chief of Police

Chief hired from within after a nationwide search.

After he was officially sworn in as Bowie's chief of police Monday, John Nesky pledged to give the city his "ultimate best."

Nesky raised his right hand and took the oath of office before a crowd of family, friends, and supporters---including former chief Katherine Perez---at Monday night's city council meeting.

Mayor G. Frederick Robinson who administered the oath said Nesky was the right choice to lead the growing department, which now stands at 48 officers.

"We believe you are the right person at the right time," Robinson told Nesky.

Nesky had been serving as acting police chief since Perez's departure in November. City Manager David Deutsch announced his selection of Nesky on March 10.

The city hired a consulting firm and conducted a nationwide search for a new police chief before settling on Nesky, who was among 130 applicants for the job.

Nesky was first hired to be deputy police chief in 2006, after Bowie voters overwhelmingly approved the creation of the Bowie Police Department in 2005.
