County Police Demonstrate the Dangers of Distracted Driving

The 14-year-old "Smooth Operator" program helps the Prince George's County Police deter aggressive driving.

In a Wednesday morning demonstration, Prince George's County Police hosted a live demonstration of a single-vehicle, rollover crash at .

The demo, with the help of the Maryland State Highway Administration, was in an effort to help commuters understand what could happen if they drive aggressively.

As a part of the Smooth Operator program, county police along with 17 other agencies in the D.C. metro region have handed out 3.6 million citations since its inception. The program, which was founded in 1997, has continued to show success.

“The safety of our roadways and those who travel on them is of paramount concern," said Chief Mark Magaw. "The Prince George’s County Police Department is committed to doing our part to combat aggressive driving and keep our roadways safe.”
