Bowie Snow Policies and Preparedness Tips

With anywhere from five to ten inches of snow expected to blanket the region between Tuesday night and early Thursday morning, residents and the city and county government are preparing for the storm. 

Here's a rundown of city and county snow policies and preparedness tips:

Plowing and Snow Removal

Bowie: The city of Bowie is responsible for snow removal on all city maintained streets. When snowfall is less than two inches, roads are treated with sand and salt, with priority given to steep hills, main roads and streets with numerous intersections.

When snow falls in excess of two inches, a snow emergency is declared in the city. Plowing will begin on main streets and streets with numerous intersections. During heavier snows, plows will remain on the street until plowing outpaces accumulation. At that point, plowing will begin on lesser streets and continue until all streets are clear.

Prince George's County: Crews first focus services on primary roadways to allow for use by emergency vehicles. Approximately 12 hours after a snowfall has stopped, crews will begin to focus on residential roadways. Please allow crews the 12-hour time frame to get into and treat residential roadways before calling the County’s Snow Information Center at 301.350.0500 or County Click at 311 to report concerns about roadway conditions. Citizens also may report roadway concerns via the Prince George's County Website at www.princegeorgescountymd.gov. Assisting in snow removal efforts will be more than 1,000 members of DPW&T's innovative Community Partnering Program. Partners report on roadway conditions within communities, which help crews to pinpoint and address concerns.

Sidewalks

Bowie: Property owners are responsible for removing snow and ice on the sidewalks in front of their homes. 

STORM SAFETY

Bowie: Residents should be prepared to shelter in place, with adequate food, supplies and ice removal equipment and materials, and plan to telework as much as possible. The city also advises that residents avoid using roadways once the snow begins to fall so that snow removal crews can adequately maneuver and remove accumulation. Residents should shovel safely and in short intervals to minimize injury.

Prince George's County: As in all inclement weather conditions, citizens and residents are encouraged not to drive for their own safety, as well as that of emergency crews.  Please make sure essential supplies, including food, medicine, batteries for flashlights, etc., are purchased prior to the start of the snowfall.  Should drivers find it necessary to be on roadways, allow extra travel time, use extreme caution and yield to emergency and snow plow vehicles.
