Bowie residents can keep unused prescription drugs out of the landfill and away from kids by dropping them off at a Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 26 at the Bowie Police Department.

“It is a great opportunity for residents to safely dispose of unwanted prescription medications,” Police Chief John Nesky told Gazette.net. “Utilizing our drop-off locations ensures that the drugs are properly disposed of versus flushing them or putting them in trash, which can harm the environment, or leaving them around the house where juveniles or other unauthorized users have access to them.”

The event is a partnership between the Bowie Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The April 26 Drug Take Back Day is part of a national event, according to the DEA’s website.

Nesky said Bowie Police Department has participated in the program the past four years. The department collected 260 pounds of medication in 2013, he said.
