Bowie’s public safety personnel are gearing up for combat.
The Bowie Police Department will face off against the Bowie Fire Department June 18 in the Smokey Bones Burger Battle. Proceeds from the event will benefit Special Olympics of Maryland.
According to the city’s website, the tailgate party starts at 7 p.m., the Burger Battle begins at 8 p.m., with an after-party to follow. Purchase different signature burgers from Smokey Bones and a portion of the proceeds will go to Special Olympics.
The competition will take place at Smokey Bones Bar and Fire Grill, 15209 Major Lansdale Blvd. in Bowie.
Sgt. Bennie Henderson of the Bowie Police Department said this is the first year the police and fire departments have competed in a burger battle.
“The goal is to raise money and educate the public about Special Olympics,” he told Gazette.net. “I definitely would like to have a good show from the community.”
Henderson said the police department’s burger-eating has been preparing for the contesnt.
“They’ve been practicing the best techniques for burger-eating,” he told Gazette.net. “But I don’t want to give away too much.”
