Police: Be Wary of Impostor Utility Workers in Bowie

Bowie police advise residents to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a utility worker.

Bowie police are warning residents to be on alert of individuals impersonating utility workers in attempt to gain access to homes, based on a recently filed police report.

Police say residents should be wary of anyone claiming to be a utility worker who shows up at his or her home with no appointment asking to check appliances, to check for gas leaks, to perform maintenance, or suggesting that there may be an electrical problem inside the house.

If this situation occurs, residents should ask for credentials—which should include name, photograph, company name, and company seal— and contact the company or utility that the person claims to work for for verification, police said.

If the individuals refuse to provide verification, residents should not let the person into the home and should call 911 immediately.

Anyone with further questions should contact Sgt. Bennie Henderson at 301-575-1842.
