UPDATE: Route 197 Reopens Following 5 Car Accident

Several patients have been transported to area hospitals with unknown injuries, according to a fire department spokesperson.

Update: 3:35 p.m.: Route 197 in Bowie has reopened in both directions following a five car collision that injured five people at around noon Friday.

Original story, 1:45 p.m.: 
Route 197 in Bowie is closed in both directions near Benjamin Tasker Middle School and Kenhill Drive following a multi vehicle car accident at around noon Friday. 

A total of five vehicles were involved in the accident and five patients have been transported to area hospitals with unknown injuries, according to Assistant Fire Chief Alicia Francis, spokesperson for the Prince George's County Fire Department. 

The cause of the accident is unknown and still under investigation at this time, Francis said.

Police and fire officials are still on the scene, and as of 1:45 p.m., the road remains closed. Traffic is being diverted down Kenhill Drive, according to city staff.
