Week in Review: Slots, Community Hero

A teacher who lives in Bowie received a $10,000 donation to further educational outreach efforts to Gambia. The work of Beverly Berndt, who lives in Bowie and teaches at New Hope Academy, was widely recognized after a Patch story was picked up by The Huffington Post.

A Bowie volunteer recently received a Community Hero Award from Dunkin' Donuts. Stacy Kornmeyer won the award that celebrates those "who go above and beyond to help keep our community running every day" for her work at Tulip Grove Elementary.

Bowie State University (BSU) offered a peek at the new Fine and Performing Arts Center with free performances Thursday and Friday by Paige Hernandez, who presented a combination of poetry, dance, visual arts and live music. BSU will hold an opening celebration for the new center in the fall.

A candlelight vigil on Monday night remembered Torrean Rich, who died in an accident on Maryland Route 301 on Feb. 9. Hundreds of friends, family and community members gathered at Largo High School to honor her memory. Twenty-eight purple balloons were released into the night sky, one for each year of her life.
