Bowie Boy Scouts Hit the Streets for the Hungry
Local Scouts left bags for their neighbors to fill with food for hungry families in Bowie and throughout Prince George's County.
While many Bowie residents were snug in their homes early Saturday morning, dozens of local Boy Scouts took to the streets as part of an annual food drive, that will locally benefit the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry.
Scouting for Food is an annual food drive conducted by the Boy Scouts of America. On Nov. 2, Scouts across the country hit the streets and hung plastic bags on the door knobs of their neighbors requesting food donations for the hungry.
In most cases, distributing the bags was a family effort.
"My family spent a huge amount of effort and time delivering plastic bags to every home in Bowie [Saturday] for Scouting for Food ... we hope to return to the same houses next Saturday, November 9 to pick those bags up full of food," Scout mom Sandie Heinicke wrote in an email.
Not sure what to give? The BSA website recommends the following items for donation:
- Non-perishable food items
- Canned protein (tuna, salmon, chicken, peanut butter)
- Soups & stews (beef stew, chili, meat-based soups)
- 100 percent fruit juices (all sizes)
- Grains (pasta, whole grain pasta, rice, brown rice, boxed macaroni & cheese)
- Cereals (multigrain, low sugar such as Cheerios, cornflakes, raisin bran, Grape Nuts, oatmeal)
- Canned vegetables
- Canned fruits
- Condiments
- Hygiene products (diapers, toilet paper, tissues, soap, toothpaste)
If you did not get a bag, but would like to contribute, any bag or box can be used. Just leave it on your front porch or driveway on Saturday before 8:30 a.m., and mark it "SFF."
