St. Matthew's Musical Theater presents .. Sondheim's Into The Woods

St. Matthew's United Methodist Church's Musical Theatre Troupe is presenting "INTO THE WOODS" on October 19, 20, 21, 26, and 28.  Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, and 3:00 p.m. on Sundays.   Tickets are $8.00 ahead of time, and $10.00 at the door.

INTO THE WOODS is a magical, imaginative adventure providing a view of what happens after “happily ever after”. The score is by Stephen Sondheim, and the book by James Lapine.  Filled with unexpected twists and dazzling insights, INTO THE WOODS is a cautionary plea for commitment expressed through masterstrokes of theatrical magic.  With tenderness and laughter, Sondheim and Lapine bring us through a maze that mirrors the complexity of everyday existence.  The plot unfolds as a childless baker and his wife, cursed by a wicked witch, go off into the woods I hopes of removing the curse.  There they encounter Cinderella, the Prince, Little Red Ridinghood, the Wolf, Jack (of the beanstalk), Rapunzel and other fairy tale characters.  By the end of Act I, everything seems to be happily resolved.  The second act brings a vengeful force leading to tragic consequences. But the characters resolve the issues leading to a painful, but hopeful resolution.

One of Sondheim's most popular works, INTO THE WOODS is a timeless yet relevant piece and a rare modern classic. INTO THE WOODS debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre on December 4, 1986. Directed by James Lapine, it played 50 performances.   INTO THE WOODS moved into Broadway's Martin Beck Theatre on November 5, 1987. Playing 764 performances on Broadway, the original production garnered three Tony Awards, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical, and a Grammy Award. The original cast featured Bernadette Peters (The Witch) and Joanna Gleason (The Baker's Wife).

Accolades/Awards:
Nine Tony nominations: Winner for Best Score and Best Book.
Winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.
Grammy for original cast album.
