Griffith Files for District 25 State Senate Seat

The seat is currently occupied by Sen. Ulysses Currie, who has faced censure and corruption charges in recent years.

Rep. Melony G. Griffith (D-District 25) is asking Mitchellville voters to give her a new job in 2014—that of state senator.

Griffith filed to run for the seat at the State Board of Elections in Annapolis on Thursday. She has served in the Maryland House of Delegates representing District 25 since 1998 and considers herself "a champion for job creation, education, health care and public safety," according to a press release.

“I am joined by my two sons, who along with the children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and neighbors in the 25th are the future of Prince George's County and the state of Maryland," Griffith said in a press release.

"It is with the next generation in mind that I have decided to run for the State Senate seat, building on the foundations of the past with vision and commitment to a better future," Griffith stated.

She also stated she will continue her term as state representative for District 25 through the current legislative session.

Griffith is the first candidate to file for the District 25 Senate seat, which is  currently held by state Sen. Ulysses Currie who was previously acquitted of corruption charges.

Currie told The Washington Post in January 2013 that he intended to seek re-election in 2014 despite an ethics inquiry that resulted in a $10,000 penalty and a censure by his state senate colleagues. The censure was connected to the corruption charges Currie faced—and was acquitted of—in 2011 that alleged Currie took $245,000 in bribes from two grocery chains, reported The Washington Post.

Currie had not filed for re-election as of the time of publishing.
