Gansler Chooses Ivey for Lieutenant Governor

Del. Jolene Ivey serves as the chairwoman for the Prince George's County delegation.

Attorney General Doug Gansler, who is running for governor in Maryland, made his choice of Del. Jolene Ivey (D-Prince George’s County) as his running mate official on Monday.

The announcement was made at Ivey’s alma mater High Point High School in Beltsville where her father worked as a teacher for a decade, according to a news release.

"I am proud to be the first African American woman to run for lieutenant governor, and when we win, to be the first Democratic African American woman to be lieutenant governor in our nation’s history" Ivey said in the news release. "I am even prouder to be given the opportunity to fight for the causes and values I share with Doug,"

Ivey has served in the General Assembly since 2007, is the delegation chairwoman for Prince George’s County, and serves on the House Ways and Means committee.

According to a news release, she previously worked for WMAR-TVin Baltimore in the 1980s and as press secretary for Sen. Ben Cardin when he served in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"This is a great day for Maryland, a great day for Jolene Ivey, a great day for the five boys she has raised, for her husband Glenn Ivey, and most significantly it is a great day for Maryland women and for Prince Georges County" Gansler said.
