Finally, Yorktown Elementary School is holding a afternoon. The annual chili cook-off benefits the Yorktown PTA.  As budget cuts eat into already slim resources, the chili cook-off helps raise much needed funds for things the school can not pay for but greatly benefit students.

The PTA helps fund the Destination Imagination team that recently went to state finals. They provide the school handwriting curriculum, "Handwriting without Tears". For the holidays, the PTA purchased new laptop memory for every single teacher, many who had not been able to log on previously.

Along with grants that the PTA helps secure, they fund assemblies and activities students would otherwise go without.   They hold monthly movie nights that encourage families to come out and spend quality time together.

Now for the kicker: Two of the judges are Bowie's recently appointed Chief of Police, John Nesky and Mayor G. Fred Robinson—hopefully they can stand the heat.
