Update: Snow Emergency Plan Lifted for Prince George's County

The Snow Emergency Plan was lifted at 4 a.m.

Update 5:55 a.m. - The Snow Emergency Plan has been lifted as of 4 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Original Post 12:51 a.m. - At 9 p.m. on Feb. 9, the Maryland State Highway Administration (MSHA) put into effect a Snow Emergency Plan for Prince George's County.

This means that the MSHA is requiring two things:

  • Prohibited parking on roads and streets designated as snow emergency routes; and
  • The use of snow tires/chains (most cars now use all weather tires, so changing to "snow" tires is unnecessary)

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang has a four-apple rating system to describe the likelihood of schools closing. Tonight's weather is putting the county between one and two apples.

Here's how their rating system shakes out:

One apple: Do your homework. You're probably having school.
Two apples: 50/50 chance for school. Good chance of at least a delay or early dismissal. Do your homework now, so you don't have to sweat it later.

So, the long and short of it is that schools will probably not be affected, and the National Weather Service is estimating less than an inch of accumulation.

That being said, the Snow Emergency Plan is still in effect, so use caution when driving and don't park on snow emergency routes.
