Sanitary Sewer Overflow in Bowie Under Control

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission repaired 7 feet of pipe after a main broke yesterday morning.

On Tuesday at 10:22 a.m., an 18-inch sewer force main failed, spilling fewer than 8,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into a wooded area near the 13700 block of Chapel Road according to a release from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC).

The spill was an effect of a break in the main, but the cause of the break is unknown. Crews replaced roughly 7 feet of pipe as a result of the incident.

“Our systems are completely separate,” said Kira Calm Lewis, a spokesperson for WSSC, explaining that the break was not near a water supply, and that the system for drinking water is a completely different component
