UPDATE: Power Restored to Most Bowie Residents

As of 9:50 p.m. Thursday, less than 150 Bowie residents were still in the dark as a result of Thursday afternoon's storm.

Update, 9:50 p.m.: The majority of Bowie residents have had their power restored as of Thursday evening, with less than 150 residents still without power, according to BGE.

The majority of the outages remaining are in neighborhoods adjacent to Whitehall Drive and Chapel Forge Drive.  No estimated restoration time has been provided by BGE.

Update, 6:15 p.m.: Power has been restored to just over 100 customers in Bowie, bringing the total number of customers without electricity down to 1,609.

Damages in the city reported so far have been minimal, according to Una Cooper, communications coordinator for the city.

“There have been about eight trees on road we’ve had to deal with and about 1,800 electrical outages but that seems to be the worst of it,” Cooper said.

Because the city knew approximately what time the storm was going to hit, they had tree and debris removal crews on standby, and were able to send them out as soon as reports of downed trees started coming in, Cooper said.

"Unfortunately, we are getting more practiced at this, so every time we feel like we are doing it a little better," Cooper said.

Original story:

A fast moving storm ripped through Bowie Thursday afternoon, prompting a tornado warning the sent local residents to their basements and interior rooms for cover.

As of 5:15 p.m., about 1,700 BGE customers in Bowie were without power, and just over 1,000 Glenn Dale customers were in the dark.

Prince George's Stadium was right in the target of the storm. Employees moved their cars to the concourse and waited out the storm in a stairwell, according to reports.

Patch has also received reports of a tree on a home in the B section, and lots of branches and debris littering roadways.
