Emergency Repairs Close Governor’s Bridge Road Bridge

The bridge was temporarily closed by Prince George's County on Friday afternoon.

The Governor’s Bridge Road Bridge was closed Friday afternoon by the Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPWT) after structural engineers determined emergency repairs were needed to ensure safety.

Originally built in 1920, the steel truss structure is located in Bowie off of Route 301, over the Patuxant River. It was inspected Friday as biennial Routine Bridge Maintenance Program, according to DWPT. As part of the program, bridges 20 feet or more in length are inspected every two years to ensure they are safe for travel.

Emergency repairs will be completed by a contractor under the direction of DWPT and are expected to take approximately four weeks. Detour signs and barriers have been placed on either side of the bridge for the duration of the project.
