The discoloration, according to the city, is caused by rust and sediment buildup in the lines. The water will still be safe to drink and to use for cooking, however washing clothing is discouraged as staining can occur.
If clothing becomes stained, it should be kept wet until it can be rewashed with rust remover, which will be provided by the city at no charge to residents. For more information, please call the Public Works Department at 301-809-2344.
