Bowie Mostly Unscathed by Hurricane Sandy

Less than a dozen fallen trees and flooding on Governor's Bridge Road were the extent of the storm's impact in the city.

Although the storm resulted in throughout Maryland, the city of Bowie remained largely unscathed by Hurricane Sandy.

As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) was reporting just over 1,700 outages in Bowie, far fewer than the city saw during the June derecho when 85 percent of homes were without power for some period of time. City officials also said that they had received reports of only 10 downed trees, and because of the lack widespread damage, yard waste rules would not be relaxed for storm clean-up.

Prince George’s County Public Schools will be open Wednesday with all students, teachers and staff expected to report as usual. The city of Bowie will also be open Wednesday, and trash and recycling pickup will resume at the normal schedule.

Early voting is also back on for Wednesday and has been extended to Friday. Governor Martin O’Malley also extended voting hours to make up for the two days missed courtesy of Hurricane Sandy.

As of Tuesday, Governor’s Bridge Road in Bowie remains closed due to major flooding, according to county officials.

In a piece of good news for the kids, trick or treating will go on as scheduled Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
