Washington Gas Gives Tickets to Local Breast Cancer Survivors

All Shades of Pink hosts 6th Annual PINK Award Dinner & Silent Auction. Sponsor Washington Gas donates 10 sets to survivors of breast cancer.

On Thursday, April 25, 2013 All Shades of Pink hosted its 6th Annual PINK Award Dinner & Silent Auction at the beautiful Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville, MD.  Council Member Karen R. Toles (Dist. 7) was the Honorary Chair of the event.  From the many sponsors to this year's event, Washington Gas elected to make all 10 of its seats available to survivors of breast cancer that would normally not be able to attend such an event due to cost. All Shades of Pink looked to individuals they had assisted in the past and invited them to join in the festivities as guests of Washington Gas.

Those recognized this year to receive the coveted Pink Lady Award for their work in the community regarding breast health awareness and cancer disparities were: Ms. Thelma Jones, survivor, advocate and breast health navigator; Dr. Vanessa Sheppard, Cancer Prevention and Control Scientist and Associate Professor at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University; and Mr. Ahmed Elmi, Community Relations Manager of the Johns Hopkins Center to Reduce Cancer Disparities.  All Shades of Pink also recognize Community Partners A.C. Moore of Bowie and Sharon Bullock of Metamorphosis Boutique of Silver Spring.  This year's Volunteer of the Year was Ms. Darla Taylor who has been the Comfort Blanket Liaison Coordinator for the organization.

Sir. Charles Cary of True-ality Enterprises was the Master of Ceremonies and Dr. Randal Pinkett, CEO of BCT Partners, Inc. and The Apprentice Show, Season 4 Winner was the guest speaker for the evening.  Approximately 40 survivors were honored by a special composition "I Will Survive" by recording artist, Earl Williams.  Each received their own copy of the song along with a tile print "Fighting for the Cure" by artist Richard Wilson.

"This was the best program to date with so many friends, guests and survivors.  Proceeds from tonight's event will help us provide financial assistance to at least 25 additional families this year, according to Denice Whalen-White, Executive Director of All Shades of Pink.

All Shades of Pink thanks the many sponsors of this year's event such as Council Member Karen R. Toles, AARP, Doctors Community Hospital, Alston & Bird LLP, Signature Breast Care, Washington Gas and The Savings Bank of Washington for their continued support.
