Visions for Vacancies: Whatever Happened to The Muffin Man

The Muffin Man was set to open in Hilltop Plaza in 2011. What happened?

There was much excitement in Bowie when a 3,370-square-foot vacant store in Hilltop Plaza .

Orginally set to open in the spring of 2011, the opening was pushed back to November 2011, but it never happened.

Whatever happened to the muffin man, the muffin man, the muffin man? Well, according to Bruce Levine, director of commercial real estate for the owners of Hilltop Plaza, the plan for the new restaurant fizzled.

"[O'Savio] personally built it out and realized it could not go forward for various reasons," Levine said.

Now, the partially built-out space beside Bowie favorite Chesapeake Grille & Deli sits empty. What would you like to see in the 3,370 square foot store front? Tell Patch in the comments.

The original opening was actually scheduled for 2010; see, for example, http://bowieliving.blogspot.com/2010/06/muffin-man-caribbean-cafe-coming-to.html

I don't think we need anymore food places in Hilltop. We already have several great restaurants and a bakery. I would love to see a book store there.

I would like to see a Scrapbook Store

I agree a small homey bookstore or a Dunkin Donuts
Marie January 02, 2013 at 06:45 PM
I agree Cindy. However, it would be nice if the bookstore also had a place for coffee/tea and scones! Just wishing here!

I'd love to see a fabric store. I miss Joann Fabrics. Now we have to go to Annapolis or Greenbelt to get fabric.

If that homey bookstore also had Wi-Fi in addition to coffee, it would be my dream location.

How about a used bookstore. An independent bookstore just can't compete with somebody like Barnes and Nobel.

Good one Cindy. I love the Grill next door and don't need more food places.
Mrs. G J Moore January 03, 2013 at 01:07 PM
No donut - we have two close by and the one on 197 is a drive thru.
Mrs. G J Moore January 03, 2013 at 01:11 PM
Yuck - but no food place at all.
Mrs. G J Moore January 03, 2013 at 01:12 PM
Mrs. G J Moore January 03, 2013 at 01:13 PM
That would be great. I agree and I miss it also.
Mrs. G J Moore January 03, 2013 at 01:14 PM
There was a used book store on old 450 - is it gone?
Mrs. G J Moore January 03, 2013 at 01:15 PM
NO FOOD The Grill is wonderful.

I wish Starbucks would move over there so they could have more outside sidewalk seating.
Marie January 03, 2013 at 03:02 PM
We could use another "good" restaurant - not a chain. It would be nice to have dinner at a table with a tablecloth once in awhile when you go out to eat! LoL Also, a tea house would be great.

A bike shop!

Potbelly would get my vote, but I agree, a JoAnn Fabrics would be great...
Diva January 03, 2013 at 09:59 PM
I love PotBelly. I wish they would put one anywhere in Bowie!
Diva January 03, 2013 at 10:01 PM
I love Potbelly! I wish they would bring one anywhere in Bowie! I have to go to Annapolis Mall, Arundel Mills or College Park for my fix.

ask Best Pie, located on old 450 to move into the vacancy. Believe me, his products are out of this world. mike rogers aka Sheriff of Rockledge
Mrs. G J Moore January 04, 2013 at 01:07 PM
His products are really good but too pricey for me except very special times. And it is more food.
Marie January 05, 2013 at 02:41 AM
I would also vote for a coffee house of old! Where you can go in, get a coffee/tea and have a place to socialize or just hang out. I liked the little place that was by the Outback a few years ago. I agree with Mrs. Moore, I like Best Pie products but priced beyond me except for special occasions.
Marie January 05, 2013 at 02:42 AM
I am sorry, but I don't know what Potbelly is. Could someone comment?
