Readers' Choice: Fishnet Catches a Win for Best Fries

It was a close race between two new-ish eateries in College Park, but Fishnet pulled away from Bobby's Burger Palace.

Apparently, Fishnet isn’t just a place to catch good fish, but some stellar French fries, too.

The Berwyn restaurant won this week’s , but the joint didn’t glide to its victory. For a week, the establishment was in a neck-and-neck flip-flop race with another eatery new to the city: .

It was a late Thursday-Friday surge in the poll, and in the Patch directory, that pushed Fishnet to the win.

Having just opened this fall, owner Ferhat Yalcin has already generated a lot of attention for his quaint restaurant on 5010 Berwyn Road. The Gazette reported this week that the Restaurant Association of Maryland nominated Fishnet as one of its top favorite new restaurants. The winning eatery will be announced April 16 at the group’s “Stars of the Industry” awards gala.

Both The Washingtonian and The Washington Post have reviewed Fishnet.

And, well, in the spirit of full disclosure, this Patch editor gave it a positive review as well, :

“The fries — oh the fries. I knew they were special once I downed the whole cup full. They were salty and flavorful, with a nice combination of softness and crunch.”

After all, I’m only human, and helpless against the power of a good, homemade fry.

Yalcin told Patch that the russet potatoes from Idaho are cut fresh each day, then soaked in a salt, water and vinegar mix for several hours, Yalcin said.

Fishnet was supported by 103 votes—50 percent of responses. That garnered 10 points in the Patch Readers’ Choice poll, in addition to 10 more points for having the .

Bobby’s Burger Palace patrons put in a dogged fight. , won 79 votes. The remaining 14 votes went to .

Score:
Fishnet: 20 points
Bobby’s Burger Palace: 8 points
Marathon Deli: 6 points

Having just returned from vacation in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, my husband and I are still in great seafood mode. We more than satisfied our taste for both lobster and crab, on the menu last night at FishNet. Keyia is so helpful and personable, that we would return simply for the opportunity to chat with this lovely new personality on the College Park scene. Don't wait as long as we did to get your first taste of fresh seafood!
