Public Hearing on Walmart Supercenter Set for Tuesday

Tuesday's public hearing will provide residents and other stakeholders with the opportunity to weigh in on the proposed 186,000 square foot store.

Walmart is looking to expand in Bowie and Tuesday, Nov. 19, the city is hosting a public hearing for residents to weigh in on the retailer's application for special exception to build a Supercenter at Mill Branch Crossing in South Bowie.

The special exception is required for any retailer seeking to build a store in excess of 125,0000 square feet in Prince George's County. The proposed Walmart Supercenter in Bowie would be 186,000 square feet, significantly larger than the current 130,000 square foot store in Collington Plaza.

The application states that there will be food and beverage in excess of 10 percent of the store’s square-footage, meaning the store will have a sizable grocery component.

City staff is recommending approval of the application, with conditons.

At a stakeholders meeting in September, residents and city officials raised several concerns, about the appearance of the building, what will happen to the current location and traffic management at the new location.
