Thursday's meeting will give Bowie residents a chance to learn more about the proposed 186,000 square foot store.

Looking to learn more about the new proposed Walmart in Bowie?

Local community members are invited to attend a stakeholders meeting at City Hall on Thursday regarding the company's proposal for a new supercenter on the north side of Mill Branch Road.

Earlier this year, Walmart announced it was looking to expand it's presence in Prince George's County by building several new stores, including a new, larger supercenter in Bowie.

The new supercenter would replace the Walmart store located near Collington Plaza, and is proposed to be 36,000 square feet larger. Due to the size of the store, Walmart was required to request a special exception to build the store, as is required in Prince George's County by all retailers seeking to build stores in excess of 125,000 square feet.

The property, which is situated on the north side of Mill Branch Road and east of the Route 301 intersection, was rezoned in 2009 from Residential-Agricultural to Commercial-Shopping-Center, paving the way for a this new store.

About 10 percent of the square footage in the new store is slated for food and beverage sales, making for a sizable grocery component.

Thursday's meeting will give stakeholders a chance to learn more about the project. The city council will hold public hearings on the project in the future, where residents will be given an opportunity to comment on the development.

The stakeholders meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at Bowie City Hall, located at 15901 Excalibur Rd.
