Custom Cake Boutique To Open Soon

Sharon White recently closed a cupcake shop in Annapolis to open The Cake Courtesan in Bowie.

Are you craving something sweet? The Cake Courtesan, a custom cake and confection boutique, is coming soon to Bowie Plaza and will be located at 6926 Laurel Bowie Rd.

The shop hasn't set an official opening date because of the work still being done by contractors and inspectors but Sharon White, owner and head cake designer, told Patch she hopes to open for business in January.

White opened on Main Street in downtown Annapolis in 2008 and closed it in 2011 to launch The Cake Courtesan in Bowie. The new shop will "focus on high-end designer wedding and event cakes, and 3-D structures as well as cupcakes and other artisan-style confections," according to a press release.

According to The Cake Courtesan website:

  • Flavors that will be available daily include yellow and chocolate cupcakes with vanilla or chocolate buttercream frosting, and red velvet cake with cream cheese buttercream frosting.
  • Rotating flavors will include carrot cake, Key lime cake, lemon, mocha, salted caramel and Mississippi mudcake.
  • Custom cakes will be made to order.
  • Some items, including cupcakes, will be available in the retail storefront.
  • Cakes and cupcakes that can be made for special dietary needs include sugar-free and vegan (but no gluten-free) options.
  • Cupcakes start at $2.75 each, "cakelets" that serve two to four people start at $25.00, 3-D and sculpted cakes require a $300 minimum.

$2.75 for a cupcake is the same as Georgetown Cupcakes and less than other cake shops like Hello Cupcake and Cakelove in DC and Cake Dreams in Rockville. So, I don't think her prices for a cupcake are extreme. Now the cakes on the other hand! Ouch! But, she may have the monopoly on shopping bags and purses (I've been dying to have that my birthday cake for the past few years!), since I can't seem to find anyone decent local- and I flat out refuse to go to Cakes Plus. If she can do a nice job and make it taste good to boot, I'll bite- just once though!

As the owner of a cake/cupcake shop I feel compelled to speak about pricing. The amount of overhead and expense that goes into a food service business is astronomical. Fees, permits, taxes, etc, etc. Also, when comparing prices you have to take into account the product , just as all cars are not created equal, all cakes/cupcakes are not. For instance, we zest and juice our own lemons, garnish with homemade almond brittle, and use premium alcohol in many of our products. Using only whole ingredients and making all components from scratch is a time consuming costly venture, however if you want a quality product. You cannot compare our prices to a shop that garnishes with a candy corn pumpkin and uses premade caramel. Unfortunately we are spoiled with the prices of national chains that offer an inferior product. As for cakes, you are paying for the time and talent it takes to create delicious edible works of art, in addition to the aforementioned overhead. I have no problem with people critiquing my product, but when it comes to the pricing, I feel a little education by the consumer is need. Thank you for taking these points into consideration.

Yeah, people need to realize that the pricing for cupcakes and cakes is not because the people who make them want to be buttholes and rip people off, but it is the time and expertise to make these things... Why do you think you pay so much for your car to get fixed? It isn't just the part you are paying for, it is the time the guys spends to fix it. People- OPEN YOUR EYES!!!!!!!! People who comment stuff like this just really have no idea what the hell they are talking about, honestly. NO offense guys, but do your research. Or open a shop and see for yourself. THAT is why most fail.. they just have no idea. Be grateful to have places that offer cakes/cupcakes... and if you don't like cakes/cupcakes.. stop commenting on threads about them...

All of your swearing andnasty comments make me think you are the owner. I hope not as I would like to see her succeed, ven though I for one will not spend that kind of money on a cupcake. I am entitled to my opinion as there is still freedom of speech in this country, if you don't like it that's fine, no need to be so nasty
