Bowie Honors Top Businesses

Local businesses were awarded for their innovation, community service, green initiatives and more.

Five Bowie businesses were honored Monday for representing the best of what the city has to offer at the city's 6th Annual Business Recognition Event.

Here’s a quick rundown of this year’s winners.

  • The Business of the Year Award, for a local company that demonstrates community involvement, financial success, customer satisfaction, and a good work environment International House of Pancakes for its kind and efficient staff, delicious food, and friendly staff, who know regulars by name.
  • The Entrepreneur Award, for a new business that has displayed innovation and growth went to SemaConnect, a developer and producer of electric vehicle charging stations and electric vehicle software.
  • The Small Business Award, for a small business that exemplifies what it means to make Bowie a thriving and prosperous city went to 'Tight N Up Barbershop and Salon Amour, a hub for the African American community in Bowie.
  • The Community Service Award, for the business highly involved in Bowie community went dentist Dr. Mark Gebella for his work providing free dental services to homeless people through the Warm Nights program hosted by St. Pius X parish.
  • Green Business Award, for the company that has shown a dedication to green business practices went to TD Bank, for operating a LEED certified Gold store in Bowie and is committed to providing e-banking options, recycling and supporting sustainable forest management.
