Cake Courtesan Launches Dessert Boutique

The custom cake shop is expanding its dessert offerings.

High-end cake bakery The Cake Courtesan is branching out.

Lemon bars, cake push pops, oatmeal cream cookies and strawberry shortcake shooters are just a few of the sweet treats you'll find these days in this Bowie based bakery.

Sisters Sharon White and Stacie Cole launched The Cake Courtesan, located in Bowie Plaza, about 18 months ago. The women ran Nostalgia Cupcakes in Annapolis for three years, but head baker and cake designer White's heart was in designing upscale cakes.

The store relaunched as a dessert boutique earlier this summer, in response to customer requests.

"We're giving people what they want," White said.

Customers were increasingly asking for single serving cupcakes and other treats, so the idea for a relaunch was born. Now, in addition to ordering dramatic wedding and party cakes, customers can come in off the streets for a slice of cake, a cake pop, cookie or cupcake.

One of the store's best sellers are what White calls, "shot glass desserts."

"It's a single serving dessert," White said, with flavors like strawberry shortcake and Meyer lemon blueberry.

Also on the menu are macaroons, brightly colored cake "push pops," and cake truffles. Still on offer are White's famous cupcakes, including Mississippi mud, red velvet and more (selection varies by day.)

White says she is still very much in the high-end cake and custom order cupcake business—the dessert boutique is a way for the business to grow and reach more customers.
