Anne Taylor LOFT in Bowie Town Center is closing its doors for good on Jan. 25.

"This location is closing January 25. But we're still in the neighborhood. Stop by and say hi," reads a sign in the store's front window, referring customers to LOFT locations at the Annapolis Mall and Waugh Chapel.

The Bowie Town Center has bid farewell to several retailers over the past 18 months—most notably Old Navy and Bed Bath & Beyond, which both relocated to Waugh Chapel—but the mall has maintained a fairly high occupancy rate.

New stores, including Fashion to Figure, Francesca's, LA Fitness, Off Broadway Shoes, Charming Charlie, FroZenYo and Teavana have opened, filling all but one vacant storefront in the shopping center. Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works have also renovated their stores in the mall in the past year-and-a-half.

Representatives from Anne Taylor LOFT did not immediately respond with comment.

TELL US: What do you think of the most recent closing in Bowie Town Center? Will you travel to Annapolis or Crofton to shop at LOFT?

What's Town Center management (not to mention local police and government who are not even two minutes away in the nice new City Hall building) doing about the theft and about mixing up the clientele? Retention of higher end stores should be on their minds, since it's good for our local economy and property values.

Robin WilliamsJanuary 14, 2014 at 09:40 am I don't think we will ever get high-end retail stores in Bowie. Our city government doesn't seem to have a plan for promoting high-end retail in Bowie. What are we getting for paying the highest property taxes in Prince George's County anyway? And, why can't we control theft in the Bowie Town Center? Theft is up even in LA Fitness! Lockers are being broken into! WTHeck is going on!!!! We must require more from those that we elect to serve us in city, county and state government! It is time to hold them accountable!

This is more than ashame, b/c I visited Loft about a month ago, and they weren't sure they were leaving (they had just gotten a new store manager). Unfortunately, it seems to be true, we don't retain quality stores in BTC. I like Francesca's, but that will probably go, also. Why is there so much theft? BB&B had complained about that. Even at LA Fitness w/ lockers getting broken into? Rediculous. If this keeps happening, people will move out of Bowie. I would do it, but the cost of the same type of townhouse in Crofton is a lot more than I pay in Bowie -- I have lived here since 1998, so I won't ever get a house for the mortgage I pay. It is really unfortunate that we can't keep high quality stores in Bowie. I am not dissing Victoria's Secret, or Bath and Body Works, or the other stores, but they will leave, also, if this continues. Yes, theft exists everywhere, but if it is worse here, and the sales aren't up, the stores will leave. SMH.

I agree with Robin. The city council and especially the city manager need to take some action to improve the viability of the currently unoccupied retail space in Bowie and be held accountable for the decline in retail occupancy and choice in existing retail areas. Does anyone know who was responsible for the revitalization of Hilltop Plaza? Walgreen's, Mom's, Chesapeake Deli, Jersey Mike's, Bowie needs to hire that person full time and put them onto revitalizing the Market Place and the Bowie Plaza. On another note... I saw a 'coming soon' sign for Anthony's Pizza and Pasta next to Salon Plaza at Free State. Woot! Woot! Bowie needs more non-chain restaurants. Can't wait to try them out! Although I do love 3-Brothers:), I miss Happy Italian Delight. and a bit of choice is always good!
