Local Residents Get Fit for the Cure

Two local Zumba instructors hosted an event benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Two weeks ago, more than 250 Zumba enthusiasts got "blinged out" for the Cure, raising $4,200 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Debi Bevins, owner of Bling it on Fitness, partnered with Club Rachel owner Rachel Brackett to host the Party in Pink Zumba Charity Event - Movin’ to End Breast Cancer on Oct. 20 at the South Bowie Community Center.

For $15 to $20, participants were invited to come to Zumba in pink “blinged out” and exercise for two hours. More than 200 local participants showed up, and all proceeds went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Six instructors volunteered their time and the Maryland Health Department was on hand giving out free breast cancer awareness information.

This is the fourth time Bevins has hosted this event, but this is the first time they had a DJ, who also donated his services.

“It made it feel more professional,” said Bevins.

Breast cancer awareness is not the only cause Bevins raises money for at Zumba parties. She’s also raised money for the American Heart Association and holds a winter fundraiser for those in need.

“We always have a theme and we bling it up,” said Bevins.

Bevins is thankful to everyone who donates their time and services at these fundraisers, including the DJ, photographers and instructors, but she is especially grateful to Maryland National Capital Area Park and Planning Commission, who donate the space for the events.

“Park and planning have really partnered with us in allowing us to use their facility,” she said.

If you missed the Party in Pink, don’t worry-you’ll have another chance to bling it up soon. Bevins hosts a winter fundraiser, where instead of donating funds, participants donate coats for those in need.
